How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) works by allowing beams of ultraviolet (UV) light to painlessly change the shape and optical power of the lens to achieve precise vision. The LAL has unique adjustable properties and can provide patients with absolute flexibility post-cataract surgery. The LAL can also correct near, intermediate, and distance vision, as well as astigmatism. This state-of-the-art lens is glare-free, halo-free, and shine-free due to the unique photo-sensitive silicone material it is made from.

The Benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens

There are numerous benefits associated with the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). The benefits of the LAL include, but are not limited to, the following:
It can reduce or eliminate the dependence on glasses after cataract surgery
It is clinically proven to offer accurate vision correction
There is no need to ever remove or replace the LAL
It is a good option for patients who previously underwent LASIK
The only intraocular lens (IOL) that can be adjusted after it’s placed in the eye
Post-surgical light treatments are quick, in-office sessions
It can correct near, intermediate, and distance vision, as well as astigmatism
There is no need for further surgery to make the adjustments
There is no need for laser vision correction after your procedure

The Disadvantages of the Light Adjustable Lens

Like with nearly everything, there are pros and cons to the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). As the most expensive upgrade of all the unique artificial lens implants, its availability is more limited. The charge for implanting and adjusting the LAL is not typically covered by insurance, and therefore, must be paid out-of-pocket by the patient. While the lens is not “medically necessary” because it doesn’t improve one’s eye health, it is a lens customized for the individual to enhance natural eyesight without glasses.
